The Kitchen is Almost Done!
October 10, 2008
This was test fitting the bamboo after we cut it down from a 4'x8' sheet to the right length and width, and notched it to fit up against the wall.
Next we made the sink cut out, and rounded the corners that overhang the back of the counter. Then we used a router to round off the top and bottom edges, and then sanded it down to a nice smooth finish.
After installing the countertop, and the dishwasher. As you can see, we were working on the drain pipes under the sink at this point. It was nice having access to the back like this to do that work.
This is how it all looks now. Its nice to have our boxes unpacked and have things in drawers and cabinets again...
After a lot of research, we ended up finishing the wood with a mineral oil and wax mixture. It has to be reapplied regularly, but we couldn't really find any non oil treatments that were really food safe.
The front and back edges of the bamboo have a cool pattern that we really like.
Looking into the kitchen from the family room.
A closer look at the grain of the bamboo.
