Steve, Kirsten, Brooke, and I had planned to climb Mt. Baker last weekend, but the weather and snow conditions didn't seem to be cooperating. This weekend didn't seem a whole lot better, but it seemed like the best choice, schedule wise. So we packed up and headed to the trailhead for the Coleman-Deming route on Friday night and found a nice spot in the woods to camp. We got a relatively early start from the trailhead (3,700 ft) Saturday morning since we were expecting the snow to get soft early. Not too long after lunch, we found a great spot at about 7,600 ft to camp. This was a bit higher than all the other people who were mostly camped about 600 ft below us. Since the snow had been so soft, we got up around midnight and were climbing by 1:15 AM. The clouds were coming and going around us, and with a full moon it made for some great scenery. As we neared the summit we got a great sunrise. Then just as we reached the summit at 10,781 ft, the clouds moved in for good, and we couldn't see much of anything. We snapped a few pictures, headed down, and finally broke out of the cloud a little below 9,000 ft and made our way back to camp to pack up and head out to the car. We were glad we'd gotten up as early as we did, since there were many people who turned back before summiting becasue of the poor visibility and really soft snow.
